View From Casa Malpais....The trees in the middle ground surround an old rock fort built by the Mormon settlers in the late 1800s. The mountains in the background are dormant volcanoes. The cliff above the trees is the end of the lava flow from a shield volcano, the rocks in the foreground are from another portion of the flow that backs the ruins of Casa Malpais to the east. This view is looking toward the northwest. This is located just north of Springerville, Arizona.

  • Casa Malpais at Sunset on Winter Solstice...Taken 12/21/12 as the sun was setting over the White Mountains. Casa Malpais Pueblo ruins are just north of the City of Springerville, Arizona and are below the top of a mesa on the western side of it. The dark wall with the gap in it allows the sun to enter what is called the "Astronomical Calendar" as it sets on Winter Solstice.

  • Astronomical Calendar at Casa Malpais Pueblo Ruins...This was taken the day of the Winter Solstice 2012. The rock wall has four openings in it to allow light to enter at certain times of the year. At sunset the sun alines with the western opening to show Winter Solstice. The cities in the background are Springerville and Eagar, Arizona.
